History:
The Traditional Tibetan Massage belongs to the Tibetan Medicine as
« external therapy ». The Tibetan Medicine is thousands
years old. Its origins belong to Tibet but also to China, India, Nepal,
Persia, and other countries.
Sharing the knowledge is part of Tibetan culture and way of
life. Tibetans have incorporated what was useful for them, in their
specific environment creating a specific technique. This open minded
mixture of different origins provides the main difference with other
forms of medicine and therapy, including massage.
When somebody is receiving a Tibetan massage, he may recognize some
parts of the session, but there are other parts which are specific
to the Tibetan practice. Pressure points connected with acupressure
and reflexology are used as well as classical motion to activate the
circulation.
Nowadays in the countryside of Tibet, Traditional Tibetan Massage
is still used. It is connected with Tibetan Buddhism and spirituality.
Some mountains are holly because they are considered to have healing
powers. From centuries, people from these mountains are healers, and
they spread their skills in other places, teaching from master to
disciple. Under the Chinese rule, the foreigners cannot visit these
Tibetan regions.
As I am used to trek in the Himalayas for more than twenty years,
including Tibet, I have been initiated to more than the “Five
Tibetans”. These exercises help me a lot to enjoy trekking and
mountaineering in high mountains. I feel more energy in my body and
in my mind the days I am practicing them.
Today in Lhasa, the capital of “Tibet Autonomous Region”,
Tibetan Massage is no more visible.
The Tibetan University of Medicine and the Barkor hospital only propose
Chinese massage. Downtown in Lhasa, massage is mainly provided by
attractive girls in hair and beauty salons and it looks like “Sex
Massage”.
Dharamsala, Mcleodganj, a small Indian town, where the Dalai Lama
lives in exile, is attracting Tibetans looking for freedom. Many of
them have crossed the Himalayas by foot. Some are genuine Tibetan
masseurs, taught by their experienced relatives or by Tibetan monks
who are also healers. They are providing Tibetan massage with their
hands, heart and soul.
Few masseurs are not giving good example. One is looking TV when giving
massage …
Another is advertising himself as “magic”… Be careful…
Make your choice.
Where to learn?
At Dharamsala, Tibetan Massage is often taught to the foreigners
with "five days course”.
